Spiced Plum Cake: A Good Fortune Spell

One thing I like to do on Samhain is a good fortune spell. I find that providing offerings to my ancestors during this time and explicitly asking for good fortune in return for the year generally yields prosperity coming my family's way.

Plus, it's divine. The cold weather now rolling in makes it almost necessary to start using warming spices.

Ingredients and Their Magickal Properties - Kitchen Magick

As I always mention in my recipe posts, the purpose of what I do as a kitchen witch relies on knowledge and intention.

Yes, this recipe will still taste delicious without transforming it into a spell. However, knowing your ingredients is essential to utilize this recipe to help change your mind, body, and spirit.

Below is a list of each added ingredient and its extraordinary power for this recipe. Please note that this is not every magickal benefit of this plant or herb, just the areas I believe should be focused on for this specific recipe.

Salt

It's not just witch tradition that believes salt is a purifier. It's this way in many different beliefs, from Western to Eastern.

As always, we must add our salt to ensure our recipe tastes good and cleanse our way for the spell work. The last thing you need when spell crafting is to have blockages or negative energies.

Whether that energy could be something you're holding on to or an outside influence, we can tap into salts' strong purifying powers.

We first pave the way by removing the negative to bring positive energy. It's a simple concept but one of great power. This is why I try to add one purifying ingredient into all of my workings, as you're just increasing the power and success of your spell.

Magickal Powers: purification, grounding.

Wheat - Flour

Wheat has had a strong foothold in civilization for centuries. Our ancestors thrived on it, worshipped it, used it as the basis for divination, and whether they have pleased the Gods.

For this spell recipe, we are focusing on its abundance property. Allow the flour energies of abundance to mingle with our expectation of good fortune to bring abundant good fortune.

Magickal Powers: Abundance, Community, Prosperity

Cinnamon

Cinnamon holds a lot of nostalgia for people. Whether sprinkled in their hot chocolate or the cinnamon sugar toast made when they were young, it's a spice that's been a part of most families' staples for years.

Although the spice we typically enjoy today is not what our ancestors used, the energies are the same.

Our use of cinnamon in this spell is two-fold. It is for our spell's purpose of good fortune, but we can also use its energy of success to ensure a successful good fortune spell.

Magickal Powers: good fortune, success, money, power

Ginger

Our warming spice friend gives us a kick both physically and spiritually for this recipe. Although love tends to be the most commonly known energy of ginger, much like its cinnamon counterpart, ginger is also great for money, success, and power.

Magickal Powers: success, money, power.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg has been used as a good luck charm for a long time, whether it's general good luck, money, health, or even your partner's fidelity.

For this recipe, we are jumping on nutmeg's spicy energies of luck, money & health. If you're not so concerned about good fortune in health, then exclude it when consecrating, but I tend to like to go all out whenever I do luck or good fortune spells.

Magickal Powers: luck, money, health

Plums

Finally, the star of our show, plums! One of the fruits that are harvested in late summer and fall.

In Chinese mythology, plums symbolize knowledge and good fortune.

Magickal Powers: good fortune

How to Implement Magick into the Recipe

*When adding your ingredients, remember to focus on the intention of the ingredient while working with it. (I.E., when folding in your flour, focus on the intention of abundance.

Not just the idea, but how does it make you feel? How does having these things in your life manifest?

I also recommend using the intentional stirring and speaking method to add to this spell. Stir counterclockwise for energies that need to be removed and clockwise for energies you wish to implement while speaking your incantations (or intention) out loud.

For example, I would stir clockwise when adding the flour while speaking to the pot.

Spirit of wheat, bless this dish with abundance.

I recommend also consecrating via an incantation when the recipe is all said and done. Although I always recommend creating your own, as spells tend to be more powerful, you can also use the incantation below:

Through this dish, I bring in good fortune. May the universe bring those who consume this dish a life that is filled with good fortune. From money, to health, may they never be lacking. So as it's been, so as it is, so as it may be.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/8 tsp salt

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground

  • 1/4 tsp ginger, ground

  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg, ground

  • 5-10 large plums, sliced

  • 1/4 cup confectioners sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare a springform cake pan or two 9-inch cake pans.

  2. Mix all the dry ingredients: baking powder, salt(Spirit of salt, bless this dish with purification, remove all negative energies preventing this spell from fruition.), and flour(Spirit of wheat, bless this dish with abundance.). Set aside.

  3. Cream together both sugars and butter until light and fluffy.

  4. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well between each addition.

  5. Add in vanilla.

  6. Add in additional spices. (Spirit of cinnamon, bless this dish with good fortune, ensure it's success) (Spirit of ginger, bless this dish with money, ensure its success through speed.) (Spirit of nutmeg, bless this dish with luck, money, and health. May good fortune be brought through these mediums.).

  7. Mix until smooth; the batter will be thick.

  8. Pour batter into the pan (or pans if using two).

  9. Arrange plums on top of the batter. (Spirit of plum, bless this dish with good fortune.)

  10. Sprinkle additional cinnamon and brown sugar on top of the plums.

  11. Bake for 50 mins - 1hr, until a knife poke comes back clean through.

  12. Let rest until cool.

  13. Sprinkle confectioner sugar on top.

(Through this dish, I bring in good fortune. May the universe bring those who consume this dish a life that is filled with good fortune. From money to health, may they never be lacking. So as it's been, so as it is, so as it may be.)
