Lore & History of Vanilla

Vanilla, a member of the orchid family, is a climbing tropical vine native to the Caribbean and South and Central America. 


Its early documentation displays its importance in the commerce of Ancient cultures such as the Aztecs, Incas, and Maya. 


The Totonacs, the first known cultivators of vanilla, or "hidden flower," viewed the plant as sacred, a gift from the gods. It was utilized for medicinal and religious purposes.


In Totanic lore, vanilla's creation comes from the vanilla orchids sprouted from the blood of a princess and her forbidden lover.


In Aztec culture, vanilla or "black flower" was discovered when they conquered the Totonac empire and used it as an addition to their Chocolatl drink given to warriors and emperors.


Historical texts in folk medicine display vanilla's use as an aromatic stimulant for mental and physical energy and aphrodisiac.


Occult practices of vanilla include its powers of Venus: allure, love, and passion.


It is said placing a vanilla bean in a bowl of sugar will infuse it with loving vibrations.


Magickal Attributes of Vanilla

Cinnamon carries feminine energy related to the water element and the planet Venus. It's loving and attraction Venus qualities create an association with beauty and love deities such as Aphrodite and Venus.


It also has an association with the Mayan goddess Tonacayohua. Lore states of vanilla's creation, the forbidden maiden who was to remain a virgin to serve Tonacayohua, ran away with her lover. Unfortunately they were caught and from their blood, the orchid vanilla sprang.


Its occult attributes range and include: Calming, Clarity, Comfort, Love, Mental Powers, Passion, Peace, Seductive, Sex, Warmth, Willpower


Magickal Uses of Vanilla

  • Wear vanilla essential oil or perfume to lower people’s guard by allowing them to feel comfortable around you.

  • Add vanilla in your morning coffee to promote self love

  • Serve baked goods with vanilla to promote compassion and ease tensions between parties

  • Use vanilla in a simmer pot before guests to promote a comforting and warming atmosphere.

  • Mix with cinnamon for a powerful energy of passion. 

  • Carry a vanilla bean to promote clarity

  • Use vanilla oil and epsom salt in a ritual bath to remove what is no longer serving you and get the the matters of your heart.

  • Use vanilla after a hard day when you need comfort and peace


Medicinal Actions of Vanilla

Medicinal uses of vanilla in herbalism are rare however in some folk texts, vanilla is recommended as a aromatic stimulant, helping to increase energy (including as an aphrodiasc) and mental function.


Energetically, vanilla is warming.
