Honey Lemon Loaf: A Love Spell
We are finally getting into spring, and for me, that means lemons and honey are abundant in my spell recipes.
One reason is that they taste like spring and make my house smell like a citrusy field.
Spring is also one of my favorite times to work on love (love is in the air, after all), and both honey and lemon are excellent for this reason.
Ingredients and Their Magickal Properties - Kitchen Magick
As I always mention in my recipe posts, the purpose of my work as a kitchen witch relies on knowledge and intention.
Yes, this recipe will still taste delicious without transforming it into a spell. However, knowing your ingredients is essential to utilize this recipe to help change your mind, body, and spirit.
Below is a list of each added ingredient and its extraordinary power for this recipe. Please note that this is not every magical benefit of this plant or herb; these are just the areas I believe should be focused on for this specific recipe.
Lemon
Although it sounds a bit counterintuitive to use lemons in a love spell (they're sour, won't they sour love?), it's quite the opposite. Lemon's brightness not only purifies but brings happiness and love.
Lemon has been used in folk magick for love inducing, including feeding them to their husbands to help keep them home at night.
With its moon planetary association and water element, lemons are a great base for our love spell.
Magickal Powers: Love, Happiness
Vanilla
Our fermented orchid, vanilla, is associated with the feminine, water, and Venus; therefore, it is all about tuning into our emotions, the exact spot to be to feel true happiness.
For a long time, folk magick utilized vanilla for love, carrying that Venus energy.
Similarly to chocolate, vanilla also carries comfort and peace to help us relax into a loving emotion.
Magickal Powers: Love, Comfort, Peace
Honey
One of the world's first sweeteners, we utilize honey's energy of love, happiness, and sex to add an extra oomph to our love spell.
I chose honey instead of sugar for this spell because it also provides us with spirituality, helping ensure that the love spell works on all fronts (physical, mental, and spiritual). It also provides extra help if you are focusing your intention on universal love or internal love.

3/4 cup honey
1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional; leave out if you don't want it as sweet)
1/2 cup butter, unsalted
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 milk, whole
1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
Glaze
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 Tbsp milk
2 Tbsp butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract, optional
Directions
Lemon Infused Honey (Optional Step)
This step is optional but will allow for the honey and lemon to combine, creating a better, more distinct flavor.
In a glass measuring cup, combine honey and lemon zest. (Spirit of honey, bless this dish with love and happiness; Spirit of lemon, bless this dish with love and happiness)
Put in a pot of water so the water reaches the top of the honey mixture.
Turn up the heat to medium-high for water to start boiling.
Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and allow to simmer for 20 minutes
Remove from height and allow to infused for at least an hour.
Do not strain zest for this recipe!
Loaf
Preheat oven to 350 F. and prepare a loaf pan. Set aside.
In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, combine sugar and melted butter. Mix well.
Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well between each egg.
Add in vanilla. (Spirit of vanilla, bless this dish with love and comfort)
Add in the sour cream, milk, and lemon juice. Mix to combine.
Gently mix in the honey mixture.
Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing just until no lumps are remaining.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
Bake in the oven for 50 minutes - 1 hour or until a knife comes out clean.
Allow the loaf to cool completely. Begin making the glaze.
Combine all the ingredients for the glaze and whisk until there are no lumps. Add milk as needed to thin out the glaze.
Once the loaf is completely cool, remove it from the pan and pour the glaze over the bread. Allow to sit for a few minutes for the glaze to harden before serving.
Eat with the intention of love.
(Through this dish, I bring in the blessings of love. May the universe surprise me with internal and external love and the openness to sense it. So as it's been, so as it is, so as it may be.)
